That’s the story of our lives in this big, mushrooming metropolis. We live in comfortable houses, oblivious of our next door neighbors, our interactions restricted to those of suspicion and fear, swiftly escalating into arguments and fights.
And yet issues of concern continue to mount – garbage disposal, health & hygiene, the safety of women & children, care of the elderly, parking spaces in congested lanes, electricity and water for all residents – basic civic consciousness. Does any of this matter at all? Does anyone care any more?
Threads of Humanity is a community volunteerism program that aims to inspire people to volunteer and make the changes around them that they would like to see. To be a part of the solution.
An active chapter of this program is focused on the rehabilitation of Juveniles Offenders, at the Sewa Kutir Complex, Kingsway Camp. Around August 2011, a series of orientations at colleges around Delhi University inspired students to volunteer their time at the “Waiting Room” – a space where under trials spend the whole day waiting for their bail plea to be heard. Our Constructive Activity Module engages with juveniles through a process of learning and fun, at the same time sensitizing University students to the issues of those living on the margins of society.
February 2012 saw the launch of our Expressive Arts therapy and Skill training program at Sahyog, a home for juvenile offenders undergoing drug rehabilitation. Here, Master Practitioners take the boys through a range of activities – from creative writing, to drawing and painting, clay modeling, puppetry, dance and theatre, helping them heal and build capacity to be able to learn a vocational skill.
We are currently looking for partners who will help set up a Skill Training Institute within the campus, so that the process of rehabilitation truly offers these juveniles an opportunity to live a life of dignity and respect, where they can comfortably provide for themselves and their families.
We also have an active programme for Musicians and performers at the Salaam Baalak Trust Sound School and at the moment are looking for more volunteers.
